Homosexuality anyone? Oddly enough with-in the past 24 hours I have heard two people talking about lesbians in their families. I personally have a gay aunt and I am very pro-gay rights. In English class today, I heard one of my fellow students talking about how her sister "left her husband for an ugly-ass woman" and how "she won't have her daughter be around that sinful lifestyle". This woman was no Kate Moss herself and the daughter she was talking about was born out of wedlock and her father is black. Her own behavior was much less then honorable, she obviously is living a sinful lifestyle because she had a child out of wedlock and many of the same ppl that see being gay as wrong, also would see inter-racial relationships as wrong as well. I started to wonder, since when do we punish people simply because they "sinned" (btw the bible never directly says "do not be a homosexual") ? We still talk to family members to lie, cheat, steal, even disobey their parents. We still talk to family members who have jealousy issues, who overindulge themselves, some people even talk to family members who have addictions, family members who have abused us and family members in jail. Shouldn't love in a family be unconditional? Shouldn't sin be between a person and god?
My second conversation was with my boyfriend about his aunt who is a lesbian. His aunt lost the love of her life because she refused to come out to her parents. Her parents however figured it out pretty quickly that her "friend" wasn't just a friend. They made the other woman feel uncomfortable and banned her from family gatherings. My boyfriend's aunt was completely rejected by her mother and the family and lost her girlfriend. My boyfriend related it to our relationship, because his mother disapproves of our relationship. Not because it is immoral, but because I am from a different finacial background (well kind of) and they think I am "taking advantage of him". Anyways, he was recently kicked out of his house and was told that he was no longer welcomed into the family, after we have dated for almost 6 months. Contrasting these two situations which show similair reactions, its not the lifestyle ppl have a problem with. Its the fact that THEY don't have control over someone in their household, that they failed to teach their son or daughter a value that they should use through out their lives.
However, we have no right to control other people. I have no right to disown a member of my family because I couldn't control them, i couldn't prevent them from something I told them was wrong. Its not my bussiness who my siblings have sex with. Niether is it the responsibility of our government to dictate which values we should or should not have, they should not have the right to control our behavior.
